The History of Hargraves Secured Investments Limited can be traced
back to Captain Charles Hargrave leaving Ireland on a boat for Adelaide
in South Australia to start a whole new life with his wife and family. He
produced some 8 children of which Joshua Addison Hargrave showed
great interest in doing law completing his degree in Adelaide then
moving to Melbourne.
On his visits to the Yarrawonga area he quickly fell in love with the
Yarrawonga District and with his young bride made plans to move to
Yarrawonga and commence legal practice in 1896.
Joshua and his bride Miss Ada Sanderson quickly established a sound
legal firm which their daughter Jessie Maud Hargrave and their son
William Wallace Hargrave eventually took over, and continued the
Hargrave name through to 1974. During Joshua’s reign he saw the need
in the local community to marry those people that had surplus funds to
invest with those business people who had a need to borrow. He
developed these loans with the concept of the borrower providing first
mortgage security over their land. This whole concept has continued
right through to the present with Hargraves Secured Investments
Limited continuing the tradition.
Hargraves Secured Investments Limited today sources funds from the
local community and makes these funds available for those people that
wish to borrow and are able to provide the appropriate first mortgage
security and satisfy the other lending criteria’s.
In the development of Hargraves Secured Investments Limited in
September of 1999 a decision was made by Mr John Gorman who was
then responsible for the mortgage practice to offer potential investors
better security and protection over and above the existence of the first
mortgage. Wishing to develop a stronger corporation he voluntarily
made the decision to register the mortgage practice with the Australian
and Securities Investment Commission (ASIC) and come under their
regulatory control. ASIC were very keen and supportive at the time to
have the Company become fully licensed with them.
Since that period of time Hargraves Secured Investments Limited has
been regulated by ASIC and they have taken on that role in a very
assertive manner requiring lodgement of a yearly Prospectus to be
approved by them and further requiring the lodgement of half
yearly returns.
We have now been under the control of ASIC for some 8 years and this
did see in October 2004 ASIC request a small amendment to our
Prospectus. This was carried out immediately and since that period of
time we have had no on going issues with ASIC of any nature whatsoever.
One of the other advantages in being licensed with ASIC is that we
operate under a very strict Trust Deed that sets out the rules and
regulations upon which we operate. These rules require the
establishment of Capital which currently sits at $2,300,000.00 disclosed
in the Balance Sheet of the Company and further requires the
establishment of liquidity, being cash reserves 'at call', which now stands
in excess of $13,000,000.00.
The whole operation of Hargraves Secured Investments Limited has now
seen them develop whereby they own their own premises at
18 Orr Street, Yarrawonga providing suitable accommodation for their
Managing Director, John Gorman, and Directors Andrew W S Macpherson and
Ross A Mulquiney.
From the early days of 1982 Mr Gorman has seen the corporation grow
from the $6,000,000.00 of funds invested through to today having a
total of approximately $60,000,000.00.
The arrangements as made have provided strong building blocks which
were first created by Joshua to continue to build upon. These building
blocks have now been made even stronger by the fact that Hargraves
Secured Investments Limited holds a license from ASIC authorising it to
carry out the work that it does. |
